REPULSE BAY (TRAINING: PARKVIEW)

Another training route location that combines some fast-running catchwater, rolling tarmac hills and a smattering of trail. Usually we look for more of the latter in our routes but for training we are less fussy. Besides, Tai Tam reservoir provides such a peaceful location and the mix of terrain keeps things interesting. This a route to keep returning to. First challenge for me will be to run all the hill sections. Didn’t come close today!

THE RIDE 🔥

A short blast around the south of the island down towards Repulse Bay. Past the beach and up South Bay Road until you reach the HKIS school. Opposite is a small, secluded cul-de-sac, plenty of room for parking the bike.

START / FINISH POINT

Opting for the more direct start/finish point for a training run here, which is just a few paces from the trail start. Its lacking in services but its convenience (meaning we don’t need to trapse up the hill to reach the trail) + secluded location, more than serves our purpose.

THE RUN 🍺

Climb the steps at the top of the road and a short scramble up the hill to join the catchwater. Turn left and run a short distance before reaching stairs on your left towards Violet Hill. A steady climb to an elevation of 245m ticks off your lion’s share of hill climb for this route. Taking a right onto the trail you hit 2.5km of catchwater that weaves around the hillside, gently sloping down to the reservoir; ideal terrain to get into your stride. Once you reach the reservoir take a left up towards Parkview to begin a testing series of undulating tarmac hills, ideal interval training. Swinging around the Parkview condo and down the hill hug the small reservoir and join the trail that loops back around Violet Hill towards home. Catchwater finally gives way to a short section of rocky trail to finish and wide sweeping views of the south island and Repulse Bay. Re-join the trail steps heading right and retrace steps back to base.
