Before we even thought about R+R training routes this one was the original. Not that we tried particularly hard to set a fastest time but would often default to this location for a quick blast on the trails. Its where we first figured out that a short loop meant ditching water packs and running "free" 😜 Even during the summer months its possible to run a single loop without water. Still one of the best <6km loops on the island for accessible running among nature.
No official parking but plenty of secluded spots to leave the scooter, together with water and provisions - enough to supplement any number of laps!
We drop down onto Walker Street, across the stream and straight into the trails. Some steps take us down to "ground level" for the 4km flat section of our route along Sir Cecil's Ride. Still at an altitude of 200m+ we're treated to a winding trail run in amongst the tree tops, around the hillside with intermittent views over the city and beyond. Plenty of shade means this route is runnable throughout the day and seasons. Rarely does a trail run involve zero hills (who wants to run flats all the time anyway?) so we finish with a good 1km of steady hill climb - feel the burn! 🥵
